Hi,
I just got a non running 1994 XR650L with about 6000km on the clock.
It will start and run until I let go of the starter button - then it died until I cleaned all the connection plugs. Now I can start it and release the starter button and just coax to run extremly roughly.

Any ideas what could be the cause of this?

Cheers,
S

Hi,
For anybody interested. I got a new CDI yesterday (joys of living in Kenya - everything takes some time) Fitted it and the bike now runs perfectly. Basically the operating ignition section of the CDI packed up while the start section (activated when you push the starter button) was still working. Discovered this by removing the wire for the start ignition system (yellow with red stripe I think) and connected directly to the battery. The bike ran but at revs the time must have been out slightly so then ordered a new CDI and now all is well.
Thanks to the guys who gave me advice on this,
S
